I started belly dancing in my late 30s to get back in touch with myself following my escape from domestic violence. After learning traditional belly dance styles with numerous teachers, I became completely captivated with the beautiful Devi Mamak, and the structure, poise and elegance of the ATS (now FCBD) (tribal) style of belly dance. I joined her class when she first started teaching in the Blue Mountains in 2000 and became an original member of her troupe Ghawazi Caravan (now known as Caravan Dance Company), and have remained devoted to her ever since! In addition to regularly performing and attending classes with Devi and Caravan Dance Company, I have taught a weekly belly dance class at Leura Belly Dance since 2018, integrating both traditional oriental style belly dance with modern fusion and FCBD (tribal) styles. Concurrently, I also taught a weekly belly dance classes for senior ladies as a volunteer with South Penrith Neighbourhood Centre from 2016 to 2019. I have also been Team Leader for the Blue Mountains Shimmy Mob Team in support of domestic violence survivors in our local community since 2020. BACKGROUND AND INTERESTS
My personal interests include dancing (of course!), long walks on the beach, spending time with family and friends, reading historical fiction and watching old movies from 1920's-1960's. I'm also passionate about my cat! HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF THE SHIMMY MOB COMMUNITY AND WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO JOIN?
I have been a part of Shimmy Mob since 2018, and have been Team Leader for the Blue Mountains for 4 years now. I was a survivor of domestic violence from many years ago when DV was a taboo subject and there were very little, if any, resources or support available for those seeking help. My involvement with Shimmy Mob has allowed me to combine my passion for dance with my desire to assist other women suffering DV by increasing community awareness and fund raising for our local women's centre. I'd like to thank Sabeya and her team for making Shimmy Mob such a fun, inclusive entity to be a part of, and a special thank you to the lovely ladies from Leura Belly Dance, who have joined me to support Shimmy Mob, and in turn, the women in our local community. |
FOLLOW ON
"My favourite thing about being part of Shimmy Mob is connecting, dancing, socialising and generally having fun with wonderful like-minded women, while contributing to our local community."
